What can I say? Wow. Where DO I start with you guys? I guess by telling you how I found out about your site and a little about who I am.
I am a 19 year old male in college at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama.
I love motorsports, especially motocross, an event in which I have competed in several races on my (gasp, Satan, the enemy!) 2002 Yamaha YZ250F. If you don’t know what that is, you should be more informed of the battle in which you are “fighting”. I found out about your site through www.thumpertalk.com a site dedicated to four stroke dirtbikes.
About my general disposition on noise: “noise” is a subjective word. I personally like rock music. Some people, generally with in the elder genre, consider this to be noise. I consider it music. Who is right? My dirtbike is VERY loud. However, it is used ONLY for closed course competition (that means a track). I like large V-8 engines. Why? they make more horsepower than other, foreign designs (read Asian 4 cylinders), and who can mistake that rich sound it makes at full song. That said, you know a little about me and my viewpoint. Now on to a SHORT summary of my critiques.
Upon viewing your “Legislative agenda” page, my first thought is, “Is this real?” This is so unbelievably extreme and invasive into personal rights and liberties I honestly asked myself if this is a communist plot. If you respond that noise is an invasion of your personal rights (as you state in so many words on your site), I ask you: Do you want to put a ban on 2am thunderstorms because it’s noise is invading your “right to peace”? Or why don’t we just put a ban on thunderstorms altogether, after all, they are loud at any time of the day. Honestly, I have yet to ever be awoken by a stereo, loud (boom, as you say) car, or, heaven forbid a leaf blower or back up alarm at 2am. Not ever. Nature, however, has sent many a thunderstorm at times and noise levels which are very offensive to me. So lets add a ban on thunderstorms, because they’re loud and invasive to my personal rights too.
Now I assume you guys at least made some effort to write out this “Legislation” in a legalistic manner. But there are so many text book errors, it calls into question the amount of effort you really put into this. The most blatant example is your use of a copy-righted name brand to describe personal water craft (PWC). “Jet Ski”, the term you use, is a registered copy-righted name for the watercraft produced by Kawasaki. To be totally politically correct and unoffensive, you should use the term PWC, or personal watercraft.
Your “statistic” that noise levels in major cities have risen by “six-fold” over the last 15 years as a cause by mainly cars is just plain ridiculous. From John Doe to automotive engineers, anyone will tell you that today’s cars are quiter than ever before. For example, I ride my bike into campus everyday. You can not hear a car coming until it is with in about 20 feet of you. And even then, we’re talking tire noise, not motor, and this is with the cars going 50 mph! You also do not take into account the increased number of automobiles and population growth during that time span.
Also in your “legislation”, you mention the loudness of “back-up beepers”. This is ridiculous. You have forgoten the reason for these devices. They are loud purposely to warn people who may be in danger behind a reversing vehicle whose operator may not have good rearward vision. You also ignore the fact that much of the reason the beepers are loud is because of the enviroment for which they were intended. Most are used around heavy equipment, construction sites, factories, etc, where it is difficult to here things as it is. The beeper must be loud enough to be heard over these things, and often, through the ear protection which accompanies them.
But far and above all in stupidness is your “legislation” for “limitations on motorized watercraft”. Here is your exact statement, cut and pasted, “(20) Limitations on motorized watercraft: Use of motorized watercraft on public waters shall be limited to times prescribed by county and local ordinance.”
This one should jump out at you. Why? This is supposed to be LEGAL LEGISLATION. If someone is writing “legislation”, should they not be aware of the actual laws and how the CURRENT government is run? I think so. So shat is the problem? Public waters are GOVERNED BY THE STATE!!!!! Logically, then, they could not be governed by “county or local ordinances”! Some legislation this is! Wow! But lets say that they were governed by counties, just for fun. Many counties use waterways as their dividers- who’s laws would be correct? After all, if you can use “one county’s” water during certain times that don’t agree with the others, are you allowed only to use one half of the water way? Also, this would be further ridiculous by the sheer number and diversity of laws. Say you are traveling down river at 5pm. The county you are in allows this, but the one ahead does not. What do you do? Stop there for the night? How would you even know? Would you put up signs? If so, where? On a buoy? Who would care? Who would patrol for those evil violators at 2am? Yes, that’s right, just let it out… NO ONE.
And finally, a “noize czar”? Are you serious? What country ARE you from? If you were trying to hide your communist plot, you have failed miserably. No self-respecting American will ever live under the power and control of a “czar”.
All in all, this is the worst written and most poorly thought-out, liberal, communist organization I have EVER seen or heard of. Your page is hilarious. And if you are as old as I think you are, it must really hurt to get destroyed by a 19 year old from Alabama. I hope I see this letter, and a response in your defense (whatever that could be) posted on your site. I look forward to many more hillarious moments on your site. Keep up the good work, giving us noise-adulterated people something to laugh about. And props to America for allowing people this stupid to have a say.
And so finally I say, down with communism, you will never control American’s lives. And up to noise pollution. In fact, I’ll use my personal rights to run my 105db dirtbike as long and loud as I want to. And for the final blow, I’ll install a straight-piped blower on my straight-piped V-8 502 powered boat, equipped with back up beeper, and I’ll blaze through “county controlled” waterways at full throttle, with my 1000 watt stereo on full blast.

Just when I thought people in the world could not be more stupid you guys jump up and volunteer.
Get a grip, buy some ear plugs and get on with life. Some of the things you mentioned are a problem - I cant stand the sound of a Harley Motorcycle myself. But to ban every sound is ignorant.
I would like to suggest you vacation in the wilds, live in the country and avoid civilization completely. Start your own little noise free community with your own noise free people.Write your own local noise free laws. But leave the rest of us alone.

Greetings,
I normally do not bother to respond to sites such as yours, but I find this irresistable.
I live in Evansville IN, a quiet little town (of 250,000+) in southwest Indiana. We have the best of all worlds, a navigable river at the city’s edge, with 24/7 freighters, tugboats, powerboats, jetskis and of course, inland gulls. We have several rail yards, 100’s of miles of railroad tracks, crossing virtually every major thorougfare, with accompanying warning bells. We have a dragstrip, and a circle track on the edge of town. I live across the street from a stadium where rock concerts are held regularly, and within 200 yards of a 6 lane expressway. Our town has at least 6 dedicated car audio shops, and 10 auto parts and repair shops which market Flowmaster and other performance mufflers. I like it here. I personally have no sympathy for anyone who moves into a major city and expects it to be quiet. It simply is not going to happen. The snowblowers, leaf blowers, lawnmowers, motorcycles, atv’s, loud cars, trains and airplanes are a part of an industrial society, which most of us happen to live in.
My best suggestions, if you really want peace and quiet, is to move to the desert, or convert to Amish and move to Pennsylvania. I drove tractor trailers over the road for many years and can recommend some very quiet places if anyone is interested.
Get over it, the vast majority of people simply do not care if they are bothering you. You can’t take away peoples right to be assholes. People like you are like most other “environmentalists”, you really don’t care about the world at large, only in the small space you happen to occupy for your insignifigant moment in time. All you want is to have your own personal idea of comfort in your small space, which is your perogative. Just don’t let your comfort impose on mine. My favorite comfort is the Recaro reclining bucket seat on the drivers side of my 500+ horsepower, 3″ exausted(113 db @ 6000 rpm measured 1 meter behind car) classic Mustang, cruising at 3500 RPM getting 7mpg while listening to KISS ALIVE III at full volume on a 2000 watt, 12 speaker Alpine sound system. The sheer joy of winding the 400 cubic inch V8 through the gears is something that those like you will, unfortunately, never understand. I strongly suggest that you do not try to take this away from me. Those who feel the way I do about thier cars, bikes and toys will fight if backed into a corner by self centered, arrogant people such as yourselves. Please be careful.

Let’s blame muffler manufacturers for loud cars and shut them down. We could blame gun manufacturers for all gun-related crimes, and shut them down. We could blame all spoon and fork manufacturers for obesity, shut them down. We could blame all lightbulb manufacturers for damaging our eyes, shut all of them down. Do you see the point that I’m trying to make? We could live without all of these little perks, but we, as American’s are lucky enough to have the means to get them. Yes, you’re pissed because some other guy has a nice-sounding car, but it’s low frequencies invade your ears’ privacy. TOO BAD! There will always be sounds that we don’t prefer to hear; deal with them. If the sound of a car’s engine pisses you off so bad, dig a deep hole in the ground and don’t come out. That would fix your problem, and the rest of us wouldn’t have to hear tree-huggers like you bitching all the time.

If you HAVE a research department you should slap them! As far as legality is concerned if the parts in question carry an E.O.# they are “emissions legal replacement parts for use on emissions vehicles” duh! Flowmaster has aggressively courted the governments approval for their products. so that negates over 1/2 of your “press release” Hmmmm.
State inspector DO look for ILLEGAL hot rod equipment, do you know why? Because when they find it they stand to MAKE MONEY from the person trying to get their vehicle inspected.
I also must call you on your “elementary school teacher” um, the police are NOT sympathetic to hot rodders as many of them deal with flat out harassment regarding legal and protected actions like driving the speed limit! You obviously do not like Motorcycles either because they make noise! Well I have a loud muffler on MY bike! You really don’t care why but it is because when people like you get in their rolling living rooms and sleep their way down the highway you don’t SEE motorcycles the noise is necessary to keep you from RUNNING OVER ME actually preventing the chaos and confusion you say we create! Again duh! so actually you are more apt to sleep your way into me driving down the highway when you DON’T hear me. That works for cars as well as motorcycles.
You think criminals want you to hear their vehicles? uh, no, stealth is a criminals friend - are you a criminal? you seem to want quiet…..
Maybe you should go after dishwasher manufacturers ant TV makers! Your dishwasher makes more annoying noise, that lasts longer, than me driving by Your house! and there hasn’t been much worth watching on TV for years.
better yet get some earplugs this is AMERICA and leave my freedom alone if you don’t like it GET OUT!

It causes NO damage to anything except for the egos of extreme environmentalists who have lost a sense of reality. Criminaity increases? Some of the most outstanding citizens also own car collections? Making a statement like that is extremely judgemental and prejudice. I’m sorry everyone can’t drive a Honda Accord that makes no noise, and also has no performance. By the way, Flowmaster exhausts are NOT Illegal anywhere, do your research before making uninformed and asinine statements as you have. I’m not sure what your group’s goals, motivations, or agendas may be, but you need to wake up and realize we are in the great United States of America. We’re not in a communist state, a monarchy, or a dictatorship, if we were, and you were in power, you could stop this “horrible problem” of nice sounding cars that show pride and quality in the American automobile heritage. Also, you do now OWN the roads and streets, if you did you may be able to stop it. However, you seem to be another spoiled yuppie who needs to have his/her own way by making everyone else conform to your ideas of how life should be. I am not going to retaliate and come rev a classic muscle car by your home, but you WILL NOT stop me from showing pride in my American car. Not everyone wants a quiet, slow, strictly economical car. I am proud of my America and proud of the great products we have made over years of my life and before. I will not settle for an inferior product that will not fit into my interests and recreational hobbies just because you are a over-complaining neighbor to someone who has an interest that you do not share with them.

Sir,
You have no clue what you’re talking about, referring to Flowmaster as the “downfall of America.” You’re truly a pathetic liberal who doesn’t know the first technical issue about cars.
Flowmaster (the company) provides a “muffler.” It does muffle the sound output of the vehicle over a stock system with no mufflers. Perhaps we should all just go without Flowmasters. I assure you that open pipes with no mufflers is at least 3dB (twice, for the non-mathematically inclined) as loud. Do you dare forget the other exhaust companies? Edelbrock, Borla, Flowtech, Magnaflow, Dynomax, Greddy, Tanabe, and other companies who I’m not familiar with…. Some of those provide import exhaust systems. Imports currently provide the most noisy exhaust, and Flowmaster isn’t even a popular name among that group of automotive enthusiasts, who mainly prefer 4 cylinder vehicles.
Do your research, you dumbass. You can’t just start a rant on a company like Flowmaster like it’s a generic name as “Coke” has come to be.
On a more sincere note, loud exhaust and hot rods are more a part of American culture than your mornic agenda has ever been. If you eliminate performance exhaust companies, you’ll sure see a louder, more obnoxious America. Believe it or not, those companies’ products do dampen noise over cars with no mufflers.
Get a clue, get a life, and most importantly, get all your facts straight before ranting on a subject. Your mis-information is not appreciated by myself or my collective group of automotive enthusiasts.

Your article has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever read . You are nothing but one of those tree hugging, more holy than thou hypocrites . I bet you have a cell phone don’t you ? Pager ? Well those things get on my nerves when I’m in a public place and that’s all you hear . You got kids ? Well your crying brats get on my nerves , we better ban the right to have children too. How about car alarms , horns on cars , mud grip tires that make a humming noise, 4cyl Imports with no muffler at all, Harley Davidsons, beeping microwave ovens, and you know, those buzzers on laundry dryers are awfully irritating, could you try and get those banned too ?
Why can’t you go on and harp and whine about something important ? Like getting those 80 year old drivers off the road, the ones that back up traffic 5 miles, running 20 in a 55 zone .
The only way you whining people will ever be happy, is if we all become Monks . The we won’t speak at all, and we better not ride horses either. The horse’s hooves make too much noise and disturb the peace .
So you just keep on driving around in your little electric Honda . Then there will still be normal, red blooded American’s like me that will fight you backwards weirdo’s. You can’t miss us, we will be the ones next to you in a REAL car, with 8 cylinders and loud exhaust, pointing and laughing at you as we rev our motors and spin rubber on your electric Easter egg .
Also, keep in mind what I said, because those cell phones keep ringing, that sure is annoying, having to hear those things ring while I’m trying to listen to my loud exhaust

I think you are all friggin idiots. Yes I know this is not a good way to try and start a letter but come on. The point of Flowmasters is simply idiotic. A flowmaster on a car will normally be quieter than these *boom boom hotrod trucks* or whatever you call them. If anything its glasspacks.
I am sure that you will not be able to accomplish anything towards your goals with this sort of generalizations.
